Student Budget in Valladolid: What a Year Actually Costs
The figure you'll be quoted is usually wrong, and always wrong in the same direction: too low.
"You can live in Valladolid on €500 a month" circulates a lot. It's true if your room costs €250, you cook every day, never go out, and don't go home at Christmas. Which is to say: true for almost nobody.
This article puts the whole number together. Real prices as of July 2026, three scenarios, and the costs most guides leave out.
The short answer
A student in Valladolid needs €600–950 a month, all in, depending on where and how they live.
For context, the same profile in Madrid runs €900–1,300. Valladolid is one of Spain's more affordable university cities, and accommodation is the main reason.

The mistake: comparing rent only
A €300 room in a shared flat does not cost €300. It costs this:

Plus two things that never appear on a monthly bill:
- Getting in: €150–400 on furniture, kitchen equipment, bedding and utility connections before your first night.
- The summer: if your lease is twelve months and the academic year is nine, you pay three months for an empty room. On €300, that's €900 a year — roughly €100 a month spread across the year.
Add those and a €300 room lands at an effective €420–500 per month of study. Ola Living's single with shared bathroom, at €385 including VAT with a nine-month minimum, sits below that.
None of which makes shared flats a bad idea. We work through it in a central residence versus a shared flat: from your second or third year, with people you already know, the balance shifts. But in your first year, with the full list in front of you, the gap is much smaller than it looks.

Cooking at home: €150–200 a month. Eating out three times a week: add €150–200.
Three things that genuinely work here:
- Mercado del Val, four minutes from Calle Pasión, beats the supermarket on fruit, vegetables and fish if you go late morning.
- Cook in a group. A shared kitchen isn't just an appliance — four people cooking together pay less per head than four cooking separately.
- **The *menú del día*** is the best value in Spanish hospitality. At €12–14 you get two courses, a drink, bread and dessert.
3. Transport: €0–40 a month
- Walking: €0. From the centre you reach Campus Centro, the Plaza Mayor, the train station and most of daily life on foot. This is the largest invisible saving of living in the old town.
- City bus (AUVASA): under-26s can request the bonoJoven card (€3 to issue). The bono30 joven, unlimited travel for 30 days, has been subsidised to around €11. Fares are revised alongside national subsidies — check the current rate at auvasa.es before topping up.
- Trips home: the cost almost nobody budgets. Valladolid-Campo Grande station is 15 minutes' walk from the centre and the AVE reaches Madrid in under an hour. Book early and use Renfe's youth pass if you're eligible.
4. Going out: €80–250 a month
A night of tapas and drinks in the centre runs €20–30 per person. Four nights out a month is €80–120. Add cinema, a gym, the odd gig and a weekend trip and you're at €200–250.

One budget note: living ten minutes' walk from the nightlife saves the taxi home — €8–10 a night, €30–40 a month. Not a reason to choose where you live, but it counts.

That last one needs saying plainly: Valladolid gets genuinely cold. It sits at 700 m on the Castilian plateau and January frosts are routine. If you're coming from southern Spain or a warm country, budget for a serious coat. It isn't a luxury.

At this level the en-suite absorbs most of the budget — hold it at €1,050 by trimming going out and sundries, or switch to the single with shared bathroom and free up €330 a month.

Five decisions that actually move the number
- Share a room. The biggest single lever: the twin works out at €261 per person against €385 for a single. That's €1,116 over an academic year.
- Live within walking distance of class. Not for the €11 bus pass — because people who live far out end up eating out, taking taxis and spending on journeys that never appear in a forecast.
- Actually cook. The gap between cooking and not cooking is about €150 a month. Over nine months, €1,350.
- Sign for nine months, not twelve. Three summer months on an empty room is €750–1,050.
- Book early. The good, affordable rooms go between June and August. Searching in September means paying more and choosing less.
